# About Fabric Marsh

Fabric Marsh is a small set of free calculators for the questions that come up between choosing a project and cutting into the cloth: how many metres is that, how much do I need at this width, how heavy is this fabric, what will it all cost, and will my pieces fit.

## The tools

- [Fabric yardage converter](https://fabricmarsh.cfd/): yards, metres, inches and centimetres, and the same area of fabric at another bolt width.
- [Garment fabric estimator](https://fabricmarsh.cfd/garment-fabric-estimator/): a typical range for 14 garments by size, width, sleeves and length.
- [GSM to oz/yd² converter](https://fabricmarsh.cfd/gsm-to-oz-converter/): fabric weight in every common form, weight classes and a swatch weigher.
- [Fabric cost calculator](https://fabricmarsh.cfd/fabric-cost-calculator/): a project's materials, the shop's cutting steps, discount, tax and shipping.
- [Pattern layout estimator](https://fabricmarsh.cfd/pattern-layout-estimator/): your pattern pieces packed onto the fabric width and drawn to scale.

## How it works

Every calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript. What you type is not sent anywhere, and the two tools that remember your work (the cost calculator and the layout estimator) keep it in your browser's local storage, where you can clear it at any time. Once a page has loaded, its tool keeps working offline.

## Where the numbers come from

Unit conversions use the exact definitions published by NIST: a yard is 0.9144 m, an inch 2.54 cm and an ounce 28.349523125 g. Each tool page lists its sources. Where there is no standard, as with garment yardage ranges and fabric weight classes, the page says that the figures are our own estimates and shows how they are built.

No calculator replaces the pattern in your hands. Pattern envelopes, shop listings and a tape measure on the actual fabric always win over a general estimate.

## Who runs it

Fabric Marsh is one of a family of small, independent tool sites. It has no shop, sells nothing and is not affiliated with any fabric brand or pattern company. Links to other sites are there because they are useful, not because anyone paid for them.
